Dutch John was built starting in 1957 by the Bureau of Reclamation to house the workers on Flaming Gorge Dam, and at its peak about 3,500 people lived here. The name goes back further, to “Dutch” John Honselena, a horse trader who settled in the area in the 1860s. The townsite was privatized in 1998, and the town incorporated in 2016.
At about 6,454 feet, Dutch John gets roughly 44 inches of snow a year, with January lows in the teens. Visitor traffic for the reservoir and the Green River adds wear to drives and lots.
