Clearing snow is only half of winter in Manila. With January lows near 12°F, a thin layer left behind after plowing can freeze hard overnight and stay that way for days. Steps, ramps, and the north side of buildings are usually the worst, since the low winter sun barely touches them for much of the day.
Our de-icing service treats those trouble spots on the same planned trips we make for snow removal. Because we group Manila stops rather than running out for single calls, we work out ahead of time which areas get treated, what product goes where, and how heavy the application should be. That way your entrances get attention on every visit instead of waiting on a separate trip that may not fit the schedule.
We know how Lucerne Valley nights work, when an afternoon thaw turns into a sheet of ice by morning.
Truck spreaders for lots and drive lanes, plus walk behind spreaders for steps, ramps, and narrow walkways.
We'll suggest the lightest treatment that does the job so you aren't paying for product your property doesn't need.
We keep salt on the pavement and away from doors, flooring, lawns, and the edges of your hay ground.
Manila gets only about 11.5 inches of total precipitation a year, which is dry country by most standards. But dry doesn’t mean free of ice. At 6,368 feet, clear winter nights get bitterly cold, and any meltwater from a sunny afternoon freezes back by morning. A lot that looked fine at noon can be slick glass when the first truck pulls in the next day.
That cycle of daytime melt and overnight freeze is what makes ice control worth it out here. Plowing gets the bulk off, and treatment keeps the thin layer underneath from turning into a hazard that hangs around all week.
Not every product belongs on every surface. Rock salt works well on asphalt in moderate cold, but it slows way down once temperatures drop into the teens and below, which is normal for a Manila January. Blends with other chlorides keep working at lower temperatures, and sand or grit adds traction when it’s too cold for any melt to do much.
Concrete needs extra thought. Newer slabs and surfaces that are already chipped or flaking can be hurt by heavy salt, so we go lighter there or switch to gentler products. If your walks are already showing wear, sealing your concrete in the warmer months helps protect the surface from melt and moisture.
Putting product down before snow starts can keep ice from bonding to the pavement, which makes plowing cleaner. After a storm, treatment goes on once the snow is pushed off so it works on the thin layer left behind instead of getting buried. Because Manila trips are planned around storms rather than made on short notice, we usually treat right after plowing on the same visit.
That keeps your property covered without needing a separate trip that might not fit the route. During long cold stretches with no new snow, we can also hit the worst spots on planned visits so a slick entrance doesn’t sit untreated for a week.
Every property has its own trouble spots, and they’re easy to predict once you know what to look for. These are the places we check on almost every visit:
We note these during the fall walkthrough so they get treated every time, not just when someone remembers. Steps and narrow paths also pair well with walkway and sidewalk clearing, so the surface is bare before any product goes down.
The town was once called Lucerne for the alfalfa grown here, and hay ground still surrounds much of Manila. Salt that gets plowed or tracked onto grass, gardens, or field edges can build up in the soil and stunt what grows there come spring. We spread with a lighter hand near lawns and field edges, keep product on the pavement, and use sand where salt would do more harm than good.
Ice control works best as part of the whole winter plan. Most customers pair it with seasonal snow removal so plowing and treatment happen on the same stop, and nothing sits waiting for a second trip.
When we set up your plan, we’ll go over which areas need treatment every visit, which only need it during the coldest stretches, and which are better left alone. You’ll know exactly what you’re paying for before the first storm.
We’ll also talk through what you can do between visits. A bucket of ice melt by the main door and a scoop for the steps covers small spots on days when the route isn’t running, and we’re glad to show you which product to keep on hand for your surfaces.
We walk your property, find the shaded steps, drip lines, and low corners that freeze, and note each surface type.
Your free quote lists the treated areas, products for concrete and asphalt, and how treatment fits your route visits.
After plowing on each trip we treat entrances, ramps, and trouble spots at a rate set for that day's cold.
Once the season settles in we review which spots stayed slick and adjust products or coverage for the rest of winter.
