Hedges and shrubs in Manila deal with a lot: roughly 38 inches of snow a year, January lows near 12°F, dry summer air, and wind that rolls across the Lucerne Valley. Overgrown shrubs catch heavy snow and split, while hedges cut at the wrong time push tender growth that freezes. A good trim keeps plants dense, healthy, and in proportion with the house.
We shape hedges, thin overgrown shrubs, lift branches off walks and siding, and cut back anything crowding windows or the driveway. Manila is far out on our route, so trimming is booked on planned trips, usually once in late spring or early summer and again later in the season if needed. Every visit ends with cleanup and hauling.
We time Manila trims around late springs and early frosts so new growth has a chance to harden before winter.
Sharp hand pruners, loppers, pole saws, and hedge trimmers let us make clean cuts on small shrubs and tall hedges.
When a bush has outgrown its space or is mostly dead wood, we'll say so plainly rather than keep shearing it every year.
We rake clippings out of beds and lawns, blow off hard surfaces, and haul every branch away when the job's done.
Timing is the biggest factor in how a shrub responds to trimming. In Manila, spring arrives late and fall frosts come early, so the growing window is tight. Most deciduous shrubs and hedges do best with a main trim in late spring or early summer, after the first flush of growth. Spring bloomers like lilac should be trimmed right after they flower, since cutting them later removes next year’s buds. The cut to avoid is a hard trim in late summer or fall. It pushes tender new growth that doesn’t have time to harden off before cold nights, and that growth often dies back over winter. We plan your visits around these windows.
Shaping and thinning do different jobs. Shaping uses shears or hedge trimmers to cut the outside of a plant into a clean form, which suits formal hedges and boxy foundation shrubs. Thinning means reaching inside the plant and removing select branches at their base. That opens the shrub to light and air, cuts down on disease, and keeps it from getting woody and bare in the middle. Most overgrown shrubs need both. A hedge that’s only ever been sheared on the outside often turns into a green shell with dead twigs inside. A little thinning each year keeps it full all the way through. On older lilacs and similar shrubs, we can also remove a few of the oldest, thickest stems at ground level each year so fresh, younger growth can take their place.
Heavy, wet snow is one of the hardest things on shrubs here. A hedge with a wide, flat top collects snow and holds it, and the weight can pry branches apart or snap them at the base. Shaping hedges slightly narrower at the top than the bottom lets snow slide off and lets sunlight reach the lower branches, so the base stays full. Upright shrubs like junipers and arborvitae can be loosely tied before winter if they’ve split in the past. In spring, we cut out broken and split limbs cleanly so they heal instead of tearing further down the stem.
Not every shrub on a Manila property was planted on purpose. Russian olive and tamarisk grow along ditches and waterways, and once they get established they spread, crowd out other plants, and throw thorny branches over fences and paths. A light trim won’t hold them back for long. Larger, woody growth along a ditch or back fence line usually needs cutting down and clearing rather than shaping. Our brush clearing service for Manila properties handles that heavier work, and then we can keep the remaining landscape shrubs trimmed on a regular schedule.
Overgrown shrubs cause problems beyond looks. These are the trouble spots we check on every trimming visit:
Some shrubs are simply too big for their spot, or too far gone to recover. When trimming won’t fix it, our tree and stump removal crew can take the plant out so you can replant with something better suited to the space.
Since Manila is a long trip out, it pays to group work. Trimming often lines up with a spring visit, when beds are being cleared and lawns are just waking up. We can rake out the beds, shape the hedges, and haul everything away in one stop. Many customers book trimming alongside a spring or fall cleanup so the whole property gets handled in one trip. We look at each shrub and hedge, note species, damage, and problem spots, and talk about the shape you want.
You get a free written quote that covers shaping, thinning, cleanup, and the trip your trimming will go on.
We shape, thin, and cut out dead or broken wood, keeping each plant's natural form and healthy structure in mind.
We walk the property with you, check the lines and clearance, and confirm all clippings have been hauled away.
