Weeds love the Basin. Puncturevine, better known as goatheads, spreads across lots and driveways and flattens bike tires. Field bindweed wraps around everything in sight, kochia and cheatgrass take over open ground, and spurge creeps through cracks and gravel. Once they go to seed, every year gets worse.
We treat weeds in lawns, beds, rock areas, gravel, fence lines, and open lots with methods that fit each area. That can mean spot treating, pre-emergent to stop seeds before they sprout, pulling in tight spots, or a combination. Timing matters a lot here, so we plan treatments around how weeds grow in our climate. The result is a cleaner, healthier yard that stays that way.
We know the Basin's toughest weeds, from goatheads to bindweed, and how they grow here.
Sprayers, spreaders, and hand tools for lawns, beds, rock, and open lots.
We'll build a plan around your weeds and budget instead of one-size-fits-all spraying.
We work carefully around plants you want to keep and leave your yard clean.
Weed control in the Ashley Valley isn’t a one-spray job. The weeds here are tough, drought hardy, and very good at seeding. A yard can look clean in May and be covered in goatheads by August. The goal is to break the cycle: knock back what’s growing, stop new seed from landing, and make the ground less welcoming for the next wave. We work on lawns, flower beds, rock areas, gravel driveways, fence lines, and vacant lots for homes and businesses in Vernal, Naples, and Maeser.
Different weeds call for different tactics, so identifying them comes first. Puncturevine, or goatheads, grows flat and low, which lets it slip under a mower, and each plant drops spiny burs that ride away on shoes and tires. Field bindweed spreads from deep roots, so pulling the top just makes it come back. Kochia shoots up fast on bare ground, then dries and breaks off as tumbleweed, scattering seed as it rolls. Cheatgrass sprouts in fall, greens up early in spring, and turns into dry, flammable straw by early summer. Spurge creeps through cracks and gravel and bleeds a milky sap. Dandelions are the easy ones by comparison, but they still need to be dealt with before they go to seed.
Most of our worst weeds are built for exactly what the Basin offers: low rainfall, strong sun, and bare or disturbed soil. Anywhere the ground gets scraped, driven on, or left open, they move in first. Thin lawns are the same story. When grass is stressed by heat or patchy watering, weeds take the gaps. That’s why weed control works best alongside good turf care. Regular lawn mowing at a taller summer height helps grass shade the soil so weed seeds have a harder time sprouting.
When we walk a property, these are the spots we check first:
Weeds coming up through pavement are a sign the cracks are wide enough to hold soil and water. Fixing those cracks with asphalt repair takes away the foothold and protects the pavement at the same time.
We pick methods based on where the weeds are and what’s growing around them. Spot treatments target weeds without hitting nearby plants. Pre-emergent in the right season stops seeds before they sprout. Hand pulling makes sense in tight beds and around vegetable gardens. Wind is a factor here too, since drift can carry a treatment where it isn’t wanted, so we watch conditions and hold off on gusty days. We’ll explain what we’re using and where, and let you know about any wait before kids and pets head back out.
Most Vernal yards need more than one visit a year. A spring round, a summer follow-up, and a fall check catch each wave as it comes up instead of chasing a yard that already went to seed.
Bigger properties bring bigger weed problems. Irrigation ditches and creek edges often fill with Russian olive and tamarisk, while open ground grows sagebrush, rabbitbrush, cheatgrass, and kochia. Spraying alone won’t touch woody growth like that. On overgrown acreage and lots, brush clearing takes out the heavy material first, and then a regular weed control plan keeps the regrowth from taking over again.
